IELTS General Training vs. Academic: Which One?

Introduction

Choosing the correct IELTS test is the very first step in your journey. The Academic and General Training tests serve entirely different purposes and have different formats for the Reading and Writing modules.

1. The Purpose

The Academic test is designed for higher education and professional registration (like nurses or doctors). The General Training test is intended for migration to English-speaking countries and secondary education.

2. The Reading Module

Academic reading features texts from journals, books, and magazines, written for a non-specialist audience. General Training reading features texts from notices, advertisements, and company handbooks.

3. The Writing Module

Task 1 in Academic requires describing a graph, chart, or diagram. Task 1 in General Training requires writing a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) based on a given situation. Task 2 is an essay for both, but General Training topics are generally simpler.

4. The Scoring Curve

Interestingly, because General Training reading texts are easier, you need to answer more questions correctly to achieve the same band score compared to the Academic test.

Decision Checklist

  • Check the requirements of your target university or employer.
  • Verify immigration authority requirements (e.g., IRCC for Canada usually requires General).
  • Familiarize yourself with the specific task types for your chosen test.

Common Mistakes

Booking the wrong test format! Universities will not accept General Training, and immigration authorities often will not accept Academic. Check twice before paying.

Conclusion

Always verify which test you need directly with the requiring institution before registering.
