Computer-Based vs Paper-Based IELTS: Which Format Is Better?

Introduction

With the widespread availability of the computer-delivered IELTS, candidates now have a choice. The test content, timing, and marking are identical, but understanding the pros and cons of the delivery method can help you perform your best.

1. The Writing Experience

If you type faster than you write, computer-based is for you. It features an automatic word count and makes editing (copy, paste, delete) incredibly easy compared to erasing pencil marks on paper.

2. The Reading Experience

The computer screen is split: the text is on the left, and the questions are on the right. You don't have to flip pages constantly. You can also highlight text on screen.

3. The Listening Experience

You get headphones with volume control for the computer test, which is a major advantage. However, you only get 2 minutes at the end to check answers, whereas paper-based gives you 10 minutes to transfer answers.

4. Results and Availability

Computer-delivered results are available in 3-5 days, compared to 13 days for paper-based. There are also more test dates available for the computer format.

Format Selection Checklist

  • Test your typing speed (aim for at least 30-40 WPM).
  • Take practice tests in both formats to see which feels better.
  • Consider your screen fatigue tolerance.
  • Check the deadline for your application to see how fast you need results.

Common Mistakes

Choosing the computer format without practicing typing under pressure, or choosing paper-based when you have messy handwriting that the examiner might struggle to read.

Conclusion

The choice depends entirely on your personal comfort. Neither format is inherently "easier" to score higher on.
